Richard Laurence Torpey, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on June 23, 2026. Born on June 18, 1936, to the late Eugene Paul and Harriet Shafer Torpey. Richard lived a rich and full life defined by his humor, his steady hands, and an unwavering devotion to his family.
On his birthday, June 18, 1965, Richard married Linda Myers Torpey. Together, they bought property in Lima, New York, and built a beautiful family. He was the devoted father of Laurence and his wife Jennifer, Karen and her husband Chaz Cerone, Michael and his wife Peggy, and Andrew and his wife Laura. Richard's legacy of love grew to include twelve grandchildren, Allison, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Joseph, Cassandra, Shayla, Liana, Roan, Bria, Daniel, Wyatt, and Juniper, as well as his great-grandson, Weston. He is also survived by his sister Carol and her husband George Vorhauer, his brother James and his wife Marcia Torpey, his brother-in-law Douglas and his wife Margaret Myers, his sister-in-law Deborah Myers, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Richard, a veteran, was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers' Local 46 for the past 64 years. His handiwork is present in many buildings in and around the Rochester area. He was known as a man who could fix absolutely anything, and loved being outdoors. Pulling into the homestead, visitors were often met by Richard tinkering in his garage, filled with every tool imaginable. He either had the needed tool, or he’d make it. He loved camping at Camp B.E.A.R. in the Adirondacks, spending his time making trails on his Kubota tractor. As an avid animal lover, he welcomed many pets into his life over the years.
Music was a constant in Richard’s life. He could often be heard playing the piano and the guitar. After dinner he often filled the house with his music. Richard's easy smile, ready laugh, and gentle strength will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Honoring Richard’s wishes, no formal funeral services will be held. In lieu flowers, memorials can be made to Rescued Treasure Pet Adoptions, 3177 Latta Road, P.O. Box 161, Greece, New York 14612 or White Whiskers Senior Dog Sanctuary, 35 Lewis Road Akron, NY 14001, in his memory.
