Obituary for Joseph S. Wallan

LIMA -
Unexpectedly on August 31, 2019, at age 91. Predeceased by his mother
and father, Della and Sam Wallan and sister Mary Butler. He is survived
by his loving wife of 69 years, Ginny; son and daughter-in-law, David
and Peggy Wallan; 2 grandchildren, Michelle (Drew) Girton, Matthew
(Sarah) Wallan; 3 great-grandchildren, Abby and Cate Girton, Isla
Wallan; sisters, Margaret Purtell and Frances Shaughnessy; many nieces
and nephews.

Joe was born in Binghamton, NY and raised in Endicott and Apalachin,
where he met his wife Ginny, before settling in Lima for 65 years. He
was a United States Marine during the Korean conflict and was retired
from the Harris Corporation in Rochester. Prior to that he worked for
Rochester Radio and as a carpenter and mechanic. In retirement he
worked part time in a small engine repair shop which gave him the
opportunity to meet and talk to people. He was patient, had many skills
and held himself to high standards - traits he passed on to his son and
grandchildren.

Joe was an exceptionally devoted husband and father who made many
sacrifices for his wife and family. He loved all children and
particularly delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He
never missed an opportunity to interact or play with the kids in his
life which resulted in him making a positive impact on many young
people. His self-deprecating sense of humor was his signature trait and
made him fun to be around. He even joked with his hospital caregivers
through the last hours of his life. In retirement Joe enjoyed serving
as an usher, Eucharistic Minister and volunteer at St. Rose Church as
well as working at the Lima food pantry. He greatly appreciated the
blessings in his life: a loving wife and family, many good friends and
many healthy and happy years.

Friends may call Thursday 3-7 PM at the O’Connell-Dougherty Funeral
Home, 2041 Lake Ave., Lima. His Funeral Mass will be held Friday 10 AM
