Life Story for Mary Agnes Decker (Bayer)

Mary Agnes Bayer was born Jan. 10th of 1924 In Rochester N.Y. She attended Mercy High School and Rochester Institute of Technology where she majored in Food Management. She married John A. Decker in 1949 and lived first in Penfield for seven years and then moved to Lima N.Y. for the next 54 years.

Mary and John had nine children and the family lived on 100 acres on Doran Road where they enjoyed a lively existence. John worked at Eastman Kodak as a design engineer while Mary Agnes ran a reasonably tight ship at home but without her children feeling too restricted.

There were treks to a nearby pond for swimming, picnics, an annual fall hike including extended family, assigned garden weeding time, and snipping beans at the picnic table. There were regular family camping vacations, two Christmas trees in the farmhouse each Christmas, and the Decker homestead was the go-to place for teenagers. The family always went to Sunday Mass together.

Mary Agnes was active at St. Rose Church in Lima and drove people to their appointments for the FISH (Friends In Service Here) organization of Livingston County.

Mary Agnes had a childhood illness that led to severe hearing loss which led her to being active in and supportive of the Hearing Loss Association of America.

John and Mary Agnes traveled regularly after retirement and for a time used a camper John had designed for the back of his truck. They enjoyed trips to Nova Scotia, Ireland, England, and Alaska as well as several states.

Mary Agnes was the oldest of her family and the last to pass away. Her father was Walter Bayer, her mother Ruth Heinzle. The family lived at 34 Culver Parkway in Rochester. She had one dear sister, Florence Fridd and a brother, Walter. She was part of the very large extended Bayer family.

Mary Agnes was deeply religious and disciplined, but also fun-loving, an excellent cook and loved to make lists. We will miss her so much but know she continues to pray for each of us and we believe we will all meet again.

In her later years, Mary Agnes lived in assisted, living at Quail Summit in Canandaigua for eight years and briefly at MM Ewing Long Term Care, also in Canandaigua. Their kind and dedicated care is much appreciated. We have been blessed by our sister-in-law Mary Decker for her faithful and devoted care in helping our Mom obtain proper health care in her later years.

If you care to make a donation in her name, send it to the Hearing Loss Association of Rochester or to FISH (Friends In Service Here) Livingston County N.Y.
